 Hello Beauties,
I am glad to introduce Mojisola Somolu,A very witty and creative Make -up Artist.

 Can we meet you?
My name is Mojisola Olubukunola Somolu, I studied English and literature at Lagos State University, I love to sing, read, makeup, cook, bake and generally work with my hands.

Why did you choose Makeup? and when did you start? at what point did you realize that you were going to do this full time?
Makeup has always been something I took interest in. From when I was about 14 I started using makeup to conceal pimples which I had a lot of in my puberty years, I’ve always been fascinated by colours and eyebrow shapes. In fact I started doing my brows at 14 as well cos I always tried to recreate looks I saw in magazines. I think from when I left secondary school I decided makeup was one of the major things I would do.

What are your favorite brands and why?
In terms of brands, it depends on the products, generally, Iman, Black Opal, Mary Kay, Mac, No7. For Iman and Black Opal, I like their powders and stick foundations respectively because it works well for our undertone and weather factor here in Nigeria without oxidization as much and they are made with black people in mind. I like marykay’s oil mattifier and No7’s primer I also love MAC and BMpro eyeshadows and they come in so many colours which opens you up to a lot of creativity and they blend well too.

Whats the craziest thing that a bride asked you for?
Well nothing yet. I haven’t really encountered such. At least I can’t remember any.

How have you being able to capture the market Lagos despite the competition?
Competition is good, it helps me stay on my toes and upgrade constantly. With the Lagos market its about creating a unique niche for myself and doing things that will keep clients coming back. For me its a simple as being extremely polite, very accommodating and having a listener ear.

You have grown since you first began, Who were the key people in your development? Did you attend a makeup school or class?
Yes I have definitely grown since I first started. All thanks to the likes of Banke Meshida Lawal, whose work I have under studied since I started doing makeup over 10years ago, Tara Fela-Durotoye who was my first boss and from whom I learnt a lot about customer service.
I didn’t go to any makeup school per se, but I have done master classes with colleagues and also attended makeup shows learnt from other artists and read a lot of makeup books. Generally self improvement and tutoring.

Who are your favorite top 5 makeup artists both locally and internationally and why?
Banke Meshida Lawal, Sam Fine, Danessa Myricks, Bobbi Brown. There are only four for now. I like Banke’s creativity and use of colours, same as Danessa Myricks. I like the way Sam does brows and lips and Bobbi Brown for the education and health aspect of makeup.

I know you also make beautiful hair pieces , doesn’t this distract you or rather how have you being able to combine both?
Yes I make hair fascinators. It doesn’t distract me, for me its all about time management

Any advise to upcoming MUA ?
For upcoming MUAs my advice would be take your time, learn as much as you can and read a lot to educate yourself. You must have a working knowledge of produts and makeup artistry and what its all about. As much as its an art, there’s a science to it.
